PacketExpert™ provides independent Ethernet/VLAN/MPLS/IP/UDP testing at wire speed for applications such as BERT, RFC 2544, and Loopback, also supports optional applications for advanced testing such as Record and Playback, ExpertSAM™, PacketBroker, Multi Stream UDP/TCP Traffic Generator and Analyzer, and ExpertTCP.

In addition, PacketExpert™ 1G (PXE100) platforms supports testing over Physical Layer (Layer 1). The physical layer abbreviated as "PHY" is the only layer over OSI model where data is physically moved across the network interface. At Layer1 cables, hubs and repeaters are used as physical devices to transmit data across the media.

PacketExpert™ configuration for Framed Layer1 BER Testing is as depicted below, can test the basic packet flow over physical connection. Connect the two test PCs present at the same location using Ethernet cable as shown below:

In Layer1 testing, data is carried over Layer1 frames. Only the Preamble, SFD and Frame Check Sequence are present. Apart from these fields, the entire frame consists of the payload (BERT pattern).
