Newsletter: GL Announces Enhanced PacketScan™ Software

Welcome to a May 2012 issue of GL Communications’ Newsletter providing information on our enhanced PacketScan™ software, an Ethernet/IP/VoIP Traffic Analyzer.

Overview

PacketScan™ is a powerful software tool that features real-time capture of Ethernet, IP, VoIP, and IP based Video traffic with extensive analysis using graphs, and statistics. Some of the important applications of PacketScan™ are:

  • Monitors live IPv4 and IPv6 networks,
  • Segregates, captures, and collects statistics on VoIP calls (H.323, SIP, MGCP, Megaco, T.38, and many others),
  • Monitors QOS (quality of service) on voice and video calls,
  • Permits analysis of, and conformance to protocol standards for the system under test or observation,
  • Provides graphical presentation of analysis, including ladder diagrams of protocols

PacketScan™ can monitor, report, analyze, and capture calls for theoretically infinite time, limited only by the finite space of your hard disk or network hard drive!

Users can listen/record audio and video data of a session in real-time; perform power, frequency, spectral, tone and digit analysis, and video analysis with ease and precision; get an exact picture of QoS (quality of the service).

PacketScan™ can work with PacketScanWeb™ a central monitoring system for a comprehensive view of network performance. It features rich graphics, ladder diagrams, CDRs (Call Data Records), and compatibility with almost every voice CODEC.

Enhancements Introduced to PacketScanTM Software:

  • IPv6 Support
The application is now enhanced to capture and analyze calls over IP version 6 (IPv6) Protocol.
  • Extract Fax Image from Fax Call
In addition to providing detail decodes of a FAX call, PacketScanTM now includes an option to extract Fax images (in TIFF format) from captured fax calls. The analyzer can also be set to trigger on fax calls and store the extracted fax images in a folder automatically during the capture.
  • Additional Codec Support
Supports two more codecs GSM-HR (Half Rate) and GSM-EFR (Enhanced Full Rate). Also supports MOS Scores for AMR_WB codec (for all 9 modes).
  • Report Mid Call Digits
Mid call outband digits detected on a call are now reported along with SIP signaling events in CSV reports.
  • Import Wireshark Traces
Provides an option to Import Wireshark traces (.pcap and .cap) into the  Analyzer. Wireshark traces can be converted to .HDL (GL's trace format) file and opened in the analyzer for analysis.

Other Features Include:

  • SIP Performance Metrics
Additional SIP performance metrics have been provided in statistics counters for SIP calls.
  • Call Summary Tab
Call Summary displays signaling, audio, and video QoS parameters for each SIP/MEGACO/RTP/H.323 calls. Audio parameters include media type, packet count, jitter, delay, gap, MOS, R-factor, lost packets, and so on.
  • Save Call
Supports Save Call feature to save a particular call either in GL’s *.HDL file format or in Wireshark's *.PCAP file format.
  • Alert Summary
Generates alerts when particular vital parameters go beyond a specified value. The Alert Summary provides an active list of the alerts that have occurred during the test session.
  • T.38 Fax Call Analysis
PacketScan™ software supports capturing and decoding of Fax (T.38 data) calls over VoIP. PacketScan™ fax decodes can be viewed in the form of T.38 call graph and call summary with decoded information for all T.38 messages received on the call.
  • VQMon Setting
Users can set E-Model based MOS and R-Factor parameters, VQmon settings, & Dynamic Payload Mapping
